Greene and Greene Hillcrest Garden

Pasadena, California

The historic Cordelia Culbertson home is the last Greene and Greene built in Pasadena. The Asian influenced architectural design is unique to typical Greene and Greene architecture with a 3,500 square foot courtyard framed by the home on three sides and enclosed by an original architectural trellis with a Wisteria vine more than 70 years old. The courtyard was a monoculture of lawn sloping 4’ with a focal water feature of Batchelder Tile. KornRandolph designed a Potager Garden within the 3,500 square foot Courtyard Garden that embraces the architectural details by introducing naturally weathered Corten steel terrace walls and planters. Gravel pathways outlined by low boxwood hedges organize the garden along with fruit trees framing the fountain and pathways. Herbs, edibles and perennials fill plots and spill over terraces. The design compliments the architecture and the garden feels as if it has always belonged to the house. The garden was selected to be part of The Garden Conservancy Open Days tour Spring 2017.
